Why Some Shops Use Plasma Cutting and Milling Together

Some metal parts have two very different personalities. The outside shape says, “Cut me fast.” The holes, slots, and mating surfaces say, “Easy there, I need precision.” That’s where plasma cutting and milling make a pretty smart pairing. Instead of asking one machine to handle the whole job, shops can split the work. A CNC plasma cutter gets the basic shape out quickly. Then the mill takes over for the details that need a closer touch. Simple idea. Very useful workflow. Why cut the blank with plasma first? Picture a chunky mounting plate with an irregular outside profile. Milling that entire shape from a solid block could mean a lot of cutting time and plenty of chips on the floor. Plasma can cut the blank close to its final shape first. The part then arrives at the milling machine with much less material left to remove.
